Gernot and Heike Heinrich founded their estate in Gols in 1990 with a single hectare and have grown it into one of Austria's defining biodynamic addresses, farming vineyards on both sides of Lake Neusiedl. “naked orange” is their entry into skin contact wine: five white varieties — Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Roter Traminer, and Muskat Ottonel — mashed in together and left on the skins for about two weeks, then pressed and fermented spontaneously in large neutral oak and clay amphorae. Amber-gold in the glass with notes of ripe mandarin, blood orange, dried apricot, orange blossom, rosehip, and herbal tea, with a fine tannic grip and a long, saline finish. Expressive but unobtrusive — far more delicate and tender than the word “orange” might suggest.
